Bottom line:
`The Other Side of the Bed" is a risqué and lively romantic comedy/musical, about two couples that unknowingly switch partners. It is superior to some modern day musicals, such as "Chicago" and "Everybody Says I Love You," but it is not nearly as innovative or entertaining as "Moulin Rouge," "South Park, Longer and Uncut," and "Dancer in the Dark."
Story Line:
"The Other Side of the Bed" is a screwball comedy in which the characters periodically break out into song and dance numbers. It's kind of like a Pedro Almodovar film, but it's not nearly as camp or subversive.
The film opens with a sexy and playful musical sequence involving two couples that are friends. Sonia and Paula long for the perfect honeymoon and they sing the provocative lyrics: "You wear the pants/ I don't wear a nightgown." The song sets the daffy, sultry tone for the film.
The charming Sonia (Paz Vega) seems to have a perfect relationship with her lover, Javier (Ernesto Alterio), and they plan to get a house together. They are friends with Paula (Natalia Verbeke) and Pedro (Guillermo Toledo) who seem to have a more troubled relationship.
One day Paula announces to Pedro that she has another lover, and she breaks it off with him. Pedro becomes obsessed and begins to follow her around. But it turns out that Javier is the one that has captured Paula's heart.
Sonia feels great pity for Pedro and she wants to help him regain his confidence with women. When she begins feeling neglected by Javier, she ends up seducing Pedro. Where it will all end up is anyone's guess.
Tell me more:
"The Other Side of the Bed" has earned many awards. It won best picture and director at Malaga Cine Espanol, and best sound at the 2003 Goya awards.
This film was the highest grossing Spanish film of the year. A sequel called "The Other Side of the Bed 2" was completed in the spring and it was budgeted at $2 million. But it's hard to see where the characters and relationships could go after this.
