Important movie fact: sometimes when the studio "thinks" a movie will get (at best) mixed reviews, they either don't screen it for the press at all, or only for major dailies like the Chicago Sun Times or Chicago Tribune. When they "know" the film will get across-the-board negative reviews, it's not screened for anyone. Such is the case with this film and "Marci X," both opened on August 22nd. While this practice is arguably unfair for reporters writing to make a living, it's undoubtedly a rip-off of the people who pay with their hard-earned money to see a movie. With only marketing spin on the film, the studio hopes to suck you in on opening weekend to see the movie before reviews show up and bad word of mouth spreads.
Tom (Ashton Kutcher) works with Lisa (Tara Reid) at her father's office. He has two goals in life, to get a promotion and to have a date with Lisa. When she asks him to come to her house, he thinks it's for a date, but it's so he can house sit with their pet owl, OJ. And just when we thought OJ jokes and commentary was over, it surfaces again. This time he is found guilty. The house proceeds to get trashed and the owl, that no longer flies, lives up to his namesake and spreads his wings and takes off. The humor is along the lines of "American Pie" but more lame (I can't believe I said that) other than the performances by Molly Shannon and Andy Richter. We also see why Tara Reid is not just banking her career on acting kudos, as she is currently doing a spread in Playboy. Wait till it comes out on video (the movie that is) or just skip it all together.
