Bottom Line:
The gang is all here, with a few new characters & the same recipe of 3 parts crude, 2 parts funny, with at least 1 ½ parts flat-out gross-out, a new twist, & a little bit of sweet, to stay in keeping with the "American" tradition.
Story Line:
The guy who got caught having sex with a pie & glued himself to himself & the girl who went to band camp to learn ways to "get herself off," are getting married. If you think about it, it's a pretty good pairing. Anyway, these two very untraditional kids want a traditional wedding, so all the elements are in play to make for an interesting journey to the altar.
Michelle's parents, her hot younger sister, & two dogs come together with Jim's "almost normal by comparison" family, & of course his best friends. Everything starts out fine, until Steve "The Stifman" Stifler gets wind of the pending nuptials & decides to interject himself, if for no other reason than to hook up with the hottie. Along the way Jim & his band of friends grow closer. We even see a bit of an evolution of Stifler¾of sorts. All of this combines with the elements we've come to love about the "American" movies. There's the father who means well but has horrible timing, the crudest of the crude in Stifler, "to the next step" Kevin, the intellectual Finch, & even an appearance by Stifler's mom (& you know what that means).
Tell Me More:
I've said before but it bears repeating that in the world of sequels, the equation rarely changes. First movie good, second movie OK & the third one is a royal stinker. The "American" franchise bucks that trend to an extent, & even takes it a little bit further in that this, the third movie, is a little bit better than the second is, in my opinion. It does everything well that it did in the previous movies, without overdoing it. It interjects new characters, which usually helps keep a sequel from getting stale, but best of all it displays a heart & sweetness that was a part of the previous pictures but is at the heart of this movie. This is an enjoyable third installment & would be a perfect place to stop, but if this movie makes a ton of money, it probably won't be.
Rated R for sexual content, language and crude humor.
